Script is a venture fund based in San Francisco focused on early-stage internet and software startups.
We partner with technical founders with $250-500k pre-seed & seed investments.
First, a primer
Venture capital has been built, and rebuilt, upon exceptions. As investors and former founders, we look at our journey as a series of reflections, changing our paths occassionally to follow our curiousity.
To that end, we have covered a lot of ground as investors since we started investing in 2015. Humanity, like the individuals upon which it’s comprised, is a dynamic, constantly moving entity.
We prefer to think about trends and market movement instead of sectors and categories. About vectors instead of vertices on the graph. We think that the world is best shaped by unique insights, formulated at the intersection of art/culture and math/science.
Our Standard Checks
As exclusively early-stage investors, we typically are the first, or one of the first institutional checks in a round.
We’ve seen some confusion around “pre-seed” and “seed” labels when fundraising. Some founders associate pre-seed/seed with the size of the round, while others associate it with company progress (revenue, users, etc…).
We don’t really care what the round is called, as long as the team demonstrates they have the ability to create at a rapid pace and the ability to learn quickly from their customers.
Generally, our checks take one of two forms:
- As a lead or co-lead in a pre-seed round of <$1M.
- As a co-lead or smaller co-investor in rounds of $1M-5M
In both cases, our typical check size is $250k-500k.
Script Sabbatical
We believe curiousity is at the core of all positive change in the world. Often, the greatest insights come before a founding team or company has been incorporated.
As such, we’re flexible in how we connect with founders. Our “Curiousity” checks provide 12-18 months runway for PhDs or folks taking Sabbatical to explore big ideas within in our offices in SF. If you’re interested in discussing this type of funding, please email us with “Script Sabbatical” as the subject line.
Script Summer
Great ideas aren’t restricted by age. Often, the more experience you have with a particular market or workflow, the harder it is to consider solutions using first principles.
College and high school students are primed to disrupt. It’s been a recurring theme throughout history, and one that we’re always thrilled to support. We’ve backed many highschool and college students that went on to found companies like Transcend, Opennote, and Butler.
If you want to take the summer to explore new ideas instead of low-level intern work, please reach out with the subject “Script Summer”.
Apply for funding
The thing we care about most is curiousity, velocity of learning and building. You need to have an exceptional obsession with a problem space and want to will an idea into existence. You don’t need to have started a company yet or have a product to apply for funding, we’re comfortable navigating the 0-1 with new founders or serial founders looking for a consistent sounding board in their early discovery phase.
